Abstract |
The author determined serum and 24hr urine protein(total protein and albumin), immunoglobulins(lgG, IgA, and IgM) and serum electrolytes(Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, and Cl) in 5 cases of childhood nephrotic syndrome before and after steroid therapy, until urinary excretion of protein was negative (remission).The results observed are summarized as follows; 1) Serum protein; Before treatment, the mean serum total protein and albumin levels were 4. O±O. 9 gm/dl and 2. 3±O. 2 gm/dl respectively. After remission, the levels of mean serum total protein and albumin were increased to 4. 9±O. 7 gm/dl and 2.3 0.2 gm/dl respectively. 2) Serum immunoglobulin; Before treatment, the mean serum IgG, IgA and IgM levels ere 390±210 mg/dl, 204±48 mg/dl and 249±61 mg/dl respectively. After remission, the levels of mean serum IgG, IgA and IgM were increased to 506±260 mg/dl, 238±51 mg/dl
and 308±101 mg/dl respectively.3) Serum electrolyte a. Na. K, CI; Before treatment, the mean serum Na,K and Cllevels were 139±7 mEq/L, 4. 4±O. 4 mEq/L and 99±8 mEq/L respectively. After remission, the levels of mean serum Na, K and CI were 138±2 mEq/L, 4. I±O. 7 mEq/L and 99±5 mEq/L respectively. b. Ca, Mg, P; Before treatment, the mean serum Ca, K and P levels were 7. O±l. 1 mg/dl, 5. 7±1. 5 mf/dl and 3. O±l. 6 mEq/L respectively. After remission, the levels of the mean serum Ca, Mg and P were 7. 9±O. 9 mg/dl, 4. 2±1. 7 mg/dl and 2. 9±O. 9 mEq/L respectively. 4) Urine protein; Eefore treatment, the 24 hr urine protein and albumin were 4.3::t4.1 gm/24 hr and 2. 2±1. 4 gm/24 hr respectively. The mean duration of remission was 9 days (range; 6-12days). 5) Urine immunoglcbulins; Before treatment, the mean 24 hr urine IgG and IgA were 403±448 mg/24 hr and 151 192 mg/24hr respectively, however IgM was not detected in theurine. |
