Abstract
We examined 1,226 male neonates in order to discover how often the testicle was undescended at birth during the 18months period from Mar. 1982 through Aug. 1983. The following results were obtained: 1)We found undescended testes in 124(10.1%) of them. 2)In babies of less than 37 weeks gestation the incidence was 39.4% whereas in those of 37 weeks or more gestation 5.5%. 3)In babies born weighing 2,509 gm or less the incidence was 33.3% whereas in those born weighing more than 2,500 gm 4.8%. 4)The bilateral undescended testes were observed in 64 babies and the unilateral undescended testes 60 babies, of which, there were 33 with right-sided and 24 with left-sided undescened testes. 5) As would be expected, bilateral undescended testes were found more commonly in premature or low birth weight infants whereas unilateral undescended testes in full-term infants. 6)The total number of undescended testes was 188, 139 located at the top of scrotum, 32 at the external inguinal ring and 17 not palpable.
