Abstract
The blood glucose response to a constant glucose infusion were measured in 36 low birth weight infants with birth weight 950 to 2,000 gm. The study includes 27 control premature infants and 9 stressed premature infants who had respiratory distress. Glucose values were similar in both the control and stressed groups in the cord and preinfusion samples. In the first postinfusion sample, hyperglycemia was seen in 5(19%) of control and in 4(44%) of stressed premature infants with blood glucose values above 125 mg/dl. In the second postinfusion samples(24 hr), hyperglycemia was seenin 3(11%) of control and in 2(22%) of stressed premature infants. Hyperglycemia in premature infants seem to be related to stress. There was no signifficant difference of mortality between hyperglycemic and euglycemic stressed infants. Stress itself, rather than hyperglycemia, was believed to increase the mortality.
