Abstract |
The blood glucose response to a constant glucose infusion were measured in 62 premature
infants weighing 1,000 to 2,200 gm. The study includes 32 stressed premature infants who
had respiratory distress, Necrotizing enterocolitis, premature rupture of membranes, sepsis
and 30 control premature infants.
During the first three hours of life, the glucose values were similar in both stressed and
the control groups. During the four hours after the infusion, the glucose values were showed
no signficant difference in both groups. Hyperglycemia was seen in 22 of the stressed and in
24 of the control premature infants with blood glucose values above 145 mg%.
We have not measured cortisol, Insulin and glycerol level in neither of these group. The
etiology of the hyperglycemia in stressed premature infants is not explained by this study.
