Abstract
A clinical and statistical analysis were made from 342 cases of premature infants, admitted to the department of pediatrics, National Medical Center, during the period of October, 1959 to August, 1968. The general mortality rate of our series was 24. 3%. There were no significant differences in incidence and mortality between both sexes. And premature deliveries were fairly evenly distributed all the year round. The most common preceding factors to premature delivery were toxemia and twin delivery in order of frequency. The mortality rate was inversely proportional to gestational age and birth weight, that is, the mortality rate was higher in short gestational age group and lower birth weight group. Initial weight loss was greater in the age group of lower birth weight Regain and true weight gain during the first month of life was slower in the lower birth weight group
