Abstract
Scanlon*s Early Neonatal Neurobehavioral Scale was administered to 110 babies delivered by normal labor and cesarean section. Fifty of the mothers had normal vaginal delivery, thirty of the mothers were induced into general anesthesia with thiopental sodium and thirty of the mothers received spinal anesthe- sia with tetracaine before cesarean section. The Scanlon*s scale involves an assessment of the infant*s state of wekefulness, varius reflexes, his muscle tone and power, as well as his responses to various stimuli, including pin prick, light and sound. Absent or very weak responses were grouped as “low” scores and moderate or brisk responses as “high” scores. Normal vaginal delivery group was associated with the greatest percentage of high score on first day for tone, rooting, sucking, sound response and alertness. Spinal anesthesia group was associated with the greatest percentage of high score on the first day for general asse- ssment, tone, sucking, More responso and alertness. And there was a statistically significant difference between spinal anesthesia group and general anesthesia group. On the third day spinal anesthesia group was associated with the greater percentage of high score for all tests although, the difference did not reach statistical significance.
