Abstract
Breast fed infants may develop unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia due to pregnane-3(alpha), 20(beta)-diol which is contained in maternal milk. 4 cases of prolonged unconjugated^hyperbilirubinemia are described here in association with breast feeding. The jaundice developed at the age of 3-4 days and persisted until 16-37 days old age. We tried to find out all known causative factors which might induce jaundice in neonatal periods, but none was found. The jaundice decreased quickly soon after cease of breast feeding within 3-5 days. Reinstation of breast milk induced jaundice again uithin 3-4 days and the jaundice decreased again with bottle feeding. Though we couldn’t check pregnane-3(alpha), 20(beta)-diol from mother’s milk, we diagnosed these cases as breast milk jaundice according to clincal experiments.
