Abstract
During the last 8 years from Jan. 1967 to Dec. 1974, 107 cases of typhoid fever has been admitted to the department of Pediatrics, Severance hospital and evaluated clinically. This is an additional study of the previous report from 1957 to 1966. The results were summarized as follows: 1.Total number of the patients was 107 and 62 were male and 45 were female. The peak age group was from 6 to 10 years of age and the youngest case was a 12 month old male patient. The seasonal incidence was prominent in July to September. The 80.4% of all cases was admitted within less than 2 weeks after onset of the disease. 2.The clinical symptoms on admission were as follows: fever(100%), abdominal pain(57%) nausea and vomiting(34.6%), headache(29.9%), anorexia and general malaise(29. 0%), diarrhea (23.4%) coughing(19.6%), constipatiion(8.4%), indigestionC3.7%), arthralgia(2.8%). On the physical examination, fever(94.4%), hepatomegaly(46.7%), injected throat(41.1%),relative bradycardia(38.3%), abdominal tendernessC37.4%), coated tongue(34.6%), abdominal distention(15. 0%), splenomegalyClO. 3), rose spots(6. 5%), and abdominal rigidity(6. 5%) were noted. 3.Laboratory findings were as follows; Anemia was 29. 0% and leukopenia was 37.4%. Widal reaction was positive in 77. 5% of all 120 tests and the rate of positive reaction was sharply increased from the second week after onset. The positive bacteriologic cultures were 50. 0% in blood and 35.1% in stool, respectively. 4.Clinical response to chloramphenicol and ampicillin with prednisone was more favorable than chloramphenicol and ampicillin alone. The average days of defervescence was 4.7 days in chloramphenicol and ampicillin alone but the group of chloramphenicol and ampicillin combined with prednisone showed 2.4 and 2.1 days in averaged defervescence. The complication associated diseases were pneumonia(9 cases), intestinal perforation(3 cases), appendicitis(2 cases), and etc.
