Abstract |
Forty-four cases of respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn and prematurity who were observed in the nursey and premature room of Ewha Womans, Univ. Hosp, from Jan. 1967 to Jun. 1975 were analysed clinically.
The incidence of respiratory distress syndrome was about 0.6% and sex ratio (Male: Female) was 7 : 4.
According to the type of delivery, its incidence was highest in cesarean section delivery (13.4%). Common symtoms were cyanosis (59.1%), grunting (50.0%), chest retraction (36.4%) and apnea (31.8%). The Apgar score at birth was not helpful in predicting which infants would develop respiratory distress syndrome and mortality of infants with high score at birth was significantly decreased from those with low score at birth. More higher fatality rates were observed in those of the lowest birth weight group less than 2,500gm.
