Abstract
The purpose of this study was to standardized a developmental screening method to aid in evaluation and detection of normal & abnormal development in children. The aim was to use the obtained normative data to devise a test format which would be simple to administer, easy to score and interpret. Another objective of this study was to determine if there were significant developmental differences between premature and term babies. Sample and Subjective: A total of 319 Korean infants were studied; 153 premature babies and 166 term babies who were born at Ewha Womans University Hospital, and followed up check at well baby cilnic at one month interval. Testing Procedure: a)Assessment of Physical Status: Clinical evaluation and measurement were performed by same Pediatrician and Nurse. Measurement included hight, weight, head and chest circumference which was measured at monthly interval. b) Assessment of developmental and intelligence status: Information regarding subjects such as parental education level, occupation, number of children in the family, position of child and developmental data relating to the time of walking and time of apperance of the first word and phrase were also secured. Authors have modified and devised developmental scales which are made up of items from standard psychological tests such as the GeselP Developmental Schedules, Usisyma’ Mental Development Scales, Song’ Physical and Motor Development Scales, Woo* Mental Development Scales. Items totaling 178 were selected from revised schedules on each of five areas of Gross Motor, motor adaptive, Language and personal- social behavior. This 178 tests items were administered to 319 infants testing at monthly interval from birth to 12 months. Valuable information can also be obtained by observing the behavior of the infants and by interviewing with their parents during the examination. Result: 1. Premature babies scored significantlly lower in all scales of developmental schedulea than term babies at every month level. Comparing D. Q. according to baby weight at birth, premature baby weighting under 2000 gm were lower than those weighting over 2000 gm, but no significant, difference in D.Q. between two groups beyond 6 ~8 months of age. 2.To compare D.Q. of breast fed and bottle fed children, former group was superior than latter group up to 5 or 7 months of age, whereas latter group seemed to be superior beyond than age. 3.Comparing the weight and height progress between premature and term babies, latter group were superior than former group, but former groups catched up in weight and height beyond 6~7 months of age. 4.D.Q. in corrected age for premature babies according to gestational period were somewhat weight superior than those in full term babies at every month level. However, no significant difference in and height were observed between two groujis of term babies and corrected age of premature babies.
