Abstract
Nine handred twenty eight Korean infants with postmaturity syndrome were bone and observed within a period of 3 years (1965-1968). These postmature babies comprise about 17% (928 out of 5429 newborn) of total newborn babies which were delivered during the same period. However the incidence of postmaturity in our service will differ somewhat from those in foreign figure or general population since our Obstetric ward deals with some problem cases and fabored patient not as in the United States where most delivery were done in the hospital. Apga Score test were done for all of the postmature babies at the delivery room and compared according to weight and gestational period of babies. Classical sign and symptom of postmaturity infants were more distinctly (significantlly) presented in 1% of newborn cases of extended 3 weeks beyond EDC than those who extended two weeks or more presenting 17% of 5429 newborn babies. For those cases presenting with postmaturity syndrome, the investigation during the hospitalization include physical check, C.B.C., S.T.S. measurement and weighting were carried out. Weight and height in postmature babies were predominant than term babies. There was no significant difference by sex in incidence and both sexes were about equally affected (448 males and 480 females). Of the 928 postmaturity babies, 27 babies died within the period of July 1965 to June 1968- Mortality rate of postmature infant was higher than the normal full term babies and climbed to 8 fold increased in the group if the baby’s weight less than 2. 5 kg. The result of this study giving us more clear cut idea how serious problems are involved in fostmaturity infants for which people used to be less concerned end rather neglected in the past.
