Abstract
With the clinical observation, Author studied the change of serum protein fractions by means of paper electrophoresis on 25 cases of epidemic encephalitis, which were admitted to Kyungpook University Hospital during the epidemic summer of 1967. The results were as follows: 1.Among the 25lcases, more than 70% was between 2 to 10 years of age, and boys were twice than girls. In the most of cases, the onset was usually sudden and abrupt accompanying with high fever, unconsciousness and meningeal signs. 2.In general, there were a mild degree of leukocytosis in acute stage, showing an average of 11,933mm3 (11, 000~12, 000/mm3), but it returned to normal limits as general symptoms improved. 3.The mean cell count of cerebrospinal fluids' was about 261/mm3 and it differential count : showed a prominent polymorphonuclear cells during acute stage, while a prominent lymphocyte elements in the recovery stage. The protein content was an average of 75 mg/100 ml in acute stage. 4.In the serum proteins: a) The total protein (T-P) and albumin (Al-P) were found lower in acute stage T-P: 2-5th days of illness 6. 0±0. 5 gm/100 ml 6-10th days of illness 5. 5±0. 5 gm/100 ml Al-P; 2~5th days of illness 50. 2 ±5. 4% 2-10th days of illness 46. 5±5. 5%, On the other hand, the albumin % was more markedly decreased in the expired cases (Al-P: 40.1 (36.7~46.7)%. b)The ai-globulin (a1-G) and a2-globulin (a2-G) were increased in acute stage. aj-G: 2~5th days of illness 4. 7±0. 8% 6-10th days of illness 5.1±1.4% a2-G: 2-5th days of illness 14. 6±3. 0% 6-10th days of illness 14. 9±2.1%, While in the expired cases, the globulin was more markedly increased to 18. 2 (13. 4~23.0)%, but they gradually returned to normal limits from 10th days of illness. c)globulin % was not changed in all cases. d)y-globulin (j-G)% was markedly increased from 5th to 15th days of illness r-G: 6-10th days of illness: 22. 7±5. 2% 11-15th days of illness: 23. 7±4. 4%, and thereafter they showed slightly decreased pattern.
