Abstract |
Clinical and bacteriological studies on 80 cases of infantile and childhood shigellosis in Korean children, from Jan. 1960 to Aug. 1967, were made. 1)49 cases were male and 31 cases were female. 2)Age incidence showed 1 and 2 years to be most commonly affected. (21 cases) and 60 cases (75%) were less than 4 years of age. The youngest patient was a 3-day- old. 3)There was no great difference in monthly incidence. However 48 cases (60%) were from June to October. There, were constantly, some cases of shigellosis throughout the year even in Winter months. 4)In 68 cases (85%), Sh. flexneri were isolated. Compared with previous reports, there are increa- sing tendency in Sh. sonnei. 5)There were 12 deaths (mortality rate 15%) and they all were less than 3 years of age. 6)As to the result of sensitivity test, neomycin was the most sensitive drug in the earlier year group (I960~1962), but furadantin was replaced in the later year group (1963~967) with 94.1% of sensitivsty. Further more tetracycline and
hloramphenicol resistant strains were significantly increased in the later year group (1963~1967) than in the earlier year group (I960~1962) 7)17 cases were treated with furadantin alone and 9 of these (53%) gave negative culture within 8 days of treatment.
