Abstract
Among the total of 17,991 newborns delivered at Hanyang University Howpital from January 1980 to December 1989, a clinical study was performed on 277 twin pregnancies. The results of the study were as follows: 1) The incidence of twins was 1:64.9. 2) The average male-female sex ratio of twins was 1:1.1, total same sex pairs rate was 79.4% (male-male & female-female) and different sex rate was 20.6%. 3) The incidence of relation with maternal parity was highest at first pregnancy. 4) 54% of distribution of birth weight was below 2,500gm. 5) Birth weight related to gestational age: a. first twins showed peak level at 40 weeks of gestation as 2,694±410 gm b. second twins showed peak leval at 41 weeks of gestation as 2,694±407gm 6) In comparison of birth weight between co-twins, first-born twin was heavier than second-bom twin at 54.5% and there was about one-half a situation less than 10% difference in body weight between co-twins, second-bom twin was heavier than first born twin at 44.4%. 7) At 1 minute, over 8 apgar score were present in 81.2% of first twins and were present in 77.6% of secod twins. 8) Perinatal mortlaity was 99.3/1,000. 9) Causes of perinatal death were immaturity, respiratory distress syndrome, complication of pregnancy and labor, congenital anomalies and infection.
