Abstract |
A prospective study was conducted to see the therapeutic effect of iron deficiency anemia on a
different oral iron doses. Studied patients consisted of 48 children with iron deficiency anemia who
were admitted to our Pediatric Department during January 1988 - September 1989. Three groups were
consisted with Group A (element iron dose 3 mg/kg/d, 16 cases), Group B (3 mg/kg/d with vitamin
C 150 mg/d, 15 cases) and Group C (6 mg/kg/d, 17 cases).
Although the hemogloin increments were faster in Group C than Group A and B (P<0.05), but the
final values were similar between three groups. Frequency of positive stool occult blood were higher
in Group C than in Group A and B (p<0.05).
We suggest that a daily total of 3 mg/kg of elemental iron in three divided doses provides an
optimal amount of iron for the initial treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children. |
