Abstract |
A clinical study was undertaken on 172 cases of intussusception who had been admitted to Kwangju
Christian Hospital from Jan. 1981 to June 1987. 110 cases were treated by barium reduction, were
analyzed and were compared with 62 cases treated surgically. The results were as followed;
1) In age incidence, 88.2% of barium reduction group (BRG) and 85.5% of surgically treated group
(STG) were under 1 year of age. Male was predominant as male to female ratio 2.2:1
2) The most common preceding iIIness in intussusception was gastroenteritis. Its incidence was 38.
2% in BRG and 30.7% in STG
3) Organic causes was found in 11%
4) Significant differences in symptoms and signs between 2 groups were found; RUQ abdominal
mass and abdominal distension(p<0.05).
5) Leukocytosis was founded more frequently in STG (77.4%) than in BRG (74.5%).
6) More predominant findings of simple abdominal X.ray for STG than for BRG were air fluid
level and mass shadow.
7) In BRG the success rate decreased by the time elapsed after the onset; 78.2% in 24 hours vs
2.7% after 48 hours
8) The types of intussusception which had needed surgical correction were ileoileocolic, ileoileal,
ileocecocolic, ileoileocecal ones.
9) The success rate of barium reduction was 64% and the recurrence rate was 11.8% in BRG and
6.4% in STG. |
