Abstract
Most of the lipids in serum are transported in the from of lipoproteins. A major portion of these lipoproteins is formed in the liver. The determination of serum lipoprotein patterns is a better index of liver abnormalities than determination of lipids alone. The authors determined serum lipid concentration and the patterns of serum lipoproteins in 40 cases of acute viral hepatitis, 26 cases of acute viral hepatitis, 26 cases of hepatitis A and 14 cases of hepatitis B, and in 8 cases of miscellaneous diseases unaccompanied with hepatic disorders as control for comparison. Serum lipoprotein fractionation was performed by the agarose gel electrophoretic method, along with the serum lipid analysis; total lipid, cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and free fatty acid were also determined in each sample. The results observed are summarized as follows; 1)The mean levels of serum total lipid in the patients with hepatitis A and B were 547.1 ±206.6 mg/dl and 437. l±100.1 mg/dl respectively. And the level in control group was 525.2 ±130.8 mg/dl. 2)The mean levels of serum cholesterol in the patients with hepatitis A and B were 155. 2 + 54.5 mg/dl and 117.2+37.6 mg/dl respectively. And the level in control group was 120. 5±57.1 mg/dl. 4)The mean levels of serum phospholipid in the patients with hepatitis A and B were 222.6±82.3 mg/dl and 177.7±52.7 mg/dl respectively. And the level in control group was 147.3±31.9mg/dl. 5)The mean levels of serum free fatty acid in the patients with hepatis A and B were 397.6±347.6 mg/1 respectively. And the level in control gronp was 298.5±226.1 mg/1. 6) The mean value of alpha-lipoprotein, pre-beta-lipoprotein and beta lipoprotein in control group were 43.6±7.6%, 18.7±8.9% and 37.8±10.4% respectively. 7)Slight decrease of alpha-lipoprotein with marked increase of beta-lipoprotein was observed in both hepatitis A and B. Pre-beta-lipoprotein was detected in 26.9% of hepatitis A and 28.5% of hepatitis B, and absence of pre-beta-lipoprotein was observed in 73.1% of hepatitis A and 71.5% of hepatitis B.
