Abstract
A 2 year 10 month old girl with 6 weeks duration and 13 year 4 month old boy with 8 weeks duration were given cyclosporin for 68 days. Therapy was initiated orally at the dosage of 10 mg per kg of body per day. Blood glucose, C-peptide, cyclosporin, creatinin, BUN and transaminase were checked regularly. Cyclosporin treatment allowed two patients to reduce their insulin dosage by 80% or more and fasting C-peptide level had increased from 0.52 to 1.32 ng/ml and 0.87 to 1.8 ng/ml respectively. At 68 days After cyclosporin treatment, glucagon tests were done and C-peptide levels increased with glucose levels. They didn’t have any hepatotoxicity or nephrotoxicity but have minor side reaction including mild loss of hair in scalp and hirsutism around eyebrows. I suggest that cyclosporin seems to be apparent benificial effect in type I diabetes mellitus and those results call for further study in a controlled clinical trials.
Key Words: Cyclosporin, C-peptide, Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
