Abstract |
The Authors observed 51 cases of meconium aspiration syndrome in newborns who were born at Severance Hospital during the period of Jan. 1980 through Jun. 1983. The following results were obtained: 1) The incidencs of meconium aspiration syndrome was 0.6%(51 cases). 2)88.2% of newborn with meconium aspiration syndrome was weighing more than 2,500 gm and 93.1% of that was with a gestational age excseding 37 weeks. 3)The neonatal mortality rate with meconium aspiration syndrome was 11.8%, over 10 times the mortality rate of neonates which were born during the same period. 4)There was a significantly greater incidence of developing meconium aspiration syndrome in infants who had lower Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes, fetal distress, delivery by cesarean section, spontaneous rupture of amniotic membrane, preeclampsia and pregnant women with anemia.
5)Chest X-ray findings of infants with meconium aspiration syndrome were consolidation, atelectasis, hyperinflation, pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum. 6)Assisted ventilation was performed in 19 cases of infants with meconium aspiration syndrome. The average period of respirator therapy was 2.8 days and the average time of admission was 9.2 days.
