Abstract |
This clinical observation was made on 2,143 newborns delivered at the National Seoul Hospital in 1979-1983 to figure out any relations between Apgar Score and problems such as late discharge, blood pH, mortality, meconium staining, and neurologic status in late childhood. The results are summarized as following: 1) Percentage distribution of Apgar score for 2,143 newborns was 3.8% for score 0-3, 12.2% for score 4-6, 84% for score 7-10. 2)4.3% remained in the nursery for 4 or more days, which was designated as a long stay.
Although only 16% of the infants had a 1-minute score of less than 6, 26.7% of infants with long stays were segregated into this group. 3)This 1-minute score placed 55.6% of the infants with a low pH in the group with a
score of 3 or less. The 5-minute score placed 55.6% of the infants with a score of 4-6. 4)Perinatal death rate was 1.78% of all newborn, and the death rate abruptly increased in the group with a score of 4 or less. 5)Meconium staining rate was 11.5%, and there was a trend to lower scores in the newborn of meconium staining. 6)Long-term outlook in newborn surviving low birth and low apgar score at birth was not as bad as had been thought.
