Abstract
We observed patients admitted to the department of Pediatrics of 24 general hospitals in Korea during the past five years from Jan. 1976 to Dec. 1980 and classified them, by year & disease according to the International Classification of Disease by W.H.O.(1965 Revision). The results were as follows: 1)The total number of pediatric inpatients was 138,136 with about 10% yearly increase except the period of 1979(about 40% of increase). 2)Infectious and parasitic disease were the most frequent(29.1%), followed by respiratory tract disease(23.9%) and perinatal disease(14.9%). 3)Major leading causes of hospitalization were pneumonia (11.8%), diarrheal disease (10.3%), hyperbilirubinemia and post maturity, upper respirctory tract infection, immaturity, acute bronchitis and bronchiolitis, nephritis, infectious hepatitis, congenital heart disease & intestinal obstruction in the order of frequency. 4) There was yearly increase in the number of inpatients but no significant change in the distribution of diseases and the leading causes of hospitalization during the past 5 years.
