Abstract
The clinical records of 28 cases with. Methemoglobinemia who were admitted to the Dept, of pediatrics, WMBH Busan from January 1978 to December 1981 were reviewed. The following results were obtained. 1) Incidence of Methemoglobinemia, was 17.8% among the all drug intoxication and seasonal incidence was peak in spring(50%). 2) The incidence was higher in boys than girls(60.7%), the highest incidence was noted in the age of 1 to 2 years. 3) The commonest causative agents were D.D.S which were 75% of all cases, Followed by Phenacetin(12.1%), Mafenide acetate(6.1%) and Bismuth(3%). 4) The most common presenting symptoms & signs on admisgi on were Cyanosis(100%), the next were irritability(92.9%), vomiting(42.9%), drowsiness(35.7%), abdominal pain(21.4), -tachycardia(17.9%) and dyspnea(7.1 %). 5) The clinical symptoms and signs of D.D.S. intoxication were noted within 5 hours after ingestion in almost all .cases (95%) and those symptoms and signs were disappeared in 4 days :since the recommendation was institated(92.9%). 6) Methemoglobin levels on admission were over 10% in all cases. 7) Methemogobin levels returned to normal rance within 3 to 5 days after treatment
