Abstract |
Despite the scientific advances made in medical science, the potential for serious hemorrhagic complications remain an important problem in patients undergoing open heart surgery with extracorporeal circultation (OHSEC). Hematologic abnormalities that have been reported in association with OHSEC and that may lead to a hemorrhagic
tendency include thrombocytopenia, alteration of coagulation factors, advanced fibrinolysis and inadequate neutralization of heparin. We investigated the changes in hemostatic parameters including platelet count (MPC), mean platelet volume
(MPV), bleeding time (BT), prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) in patients who underwent OHSEC. The results are summarized in the table shown below: Although there were several statistically significant changes observed in creatain parameters such as MPC, MPV,
BT and aPTT, no clincially apparent hemorrgagic complications were observed. |
