Abstract
To study the predictive value of gastric aspirates shake test on respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in the newborn infants, we carried out the shake test on gastric aspirates of all newborn who admitted to NICU of Seoul National University Hospital from July 1986 to December 1987. We successfully carried out gastric aspirates shake test on 96 newborn infants and analyzed the relation between gastric aspirates shake test and RDS. The results were summarized as follows: 1) Among the total 96 cases, RDS were found in 14 cases (14.6%). 2) In total cases male to female ratio was 1.29:1. In RDS cases male to female ratio was 1.33:1. 3) In total cases average gestational period was 33.6 weeks and preterm infant was 78.1%. In RDS cases average gestational period was 31.7 weeks and preterm infnat was 92.9%. 4) In total es average biπh weight was 2,089 gm and low birth weight infant was 72.1%. In RDS cases average birth weight was 1,870 gm and low birth weight infant was 78.6%. 5) RDS occurrence rate was 2.9% in positive group, 30% in + 1 group, 61.5% in negative group. RDS occurrence rate was higher in the order of negative, +1, and positive group. We predict RDS more exactly when gastric aspirates shake test + 1 was included to positive than negative. 6) Gestational period was important in reading the gastric aspirates lake test result. When gastric aspirates shake test result was + 1 or negative in preterm infants, RDS occurrence rate was significantly higher than positive infants group. But in term group, RDS occurrence rate was not different from positive infants group. In preterm group, + 1 or negative revealed higher RDS incidecne, but in term group, positive result revealed no RDS. 7) Birth weight was important in reading the gastric aspirates shake test result. In low birth weight group, + 1 or negative result revealed higher RDS incidence, but in normal birth weight group, positive result revealed no RDS.
