Abstract
Bronchial washings and throat cultures have been performed on 41 cases of chronic or recurrent respiratory infection who were admitted to the department of Pediatrics, Yonsei University from July 1981 to December 1983. The results are as follows; 1)By bronchial washing, organisms were isolated in 74.1% of the all pneumonia patients and 57.1% of the pulmonary tuberculosis with complication patients, but in bronchiectasis and bronchogenic cyst patients, no organisms were isolated. 2) Among the chronic or recurrent pneumonia patients, organisms were isolated by bronchial washing in 73.3% and 87.5% of the prolonged intubated patients. 3)The organisms of the chronic or recurrent pneumonia patients isolated by bronchial washing were highly pathogenic agents, whereas organisms isolated by throat culture were almost non-pathogenic ones. Same organisms were rarely isolated in bronchial washing and throat culture. Above results mean that throat culture is not reliable method in detection of pathogsns of the lower respiratory tract infection, whereas bronchial washing is an easy, safe and reliable method.
