Abstract |
The author reviewed the clinical and hematological findings of the 110 children diagnosed
as leukemia at pediatric departments, Busan National University and St. Benedict’s Hospital,
Busan, during a period of 8 years arid 8 months from January 1973 to August 1981.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. Of the 110 chil-dhood leukemias, acute lymphoblastic type was most frequent(60.9%),
iollowed by acute myeloblastic type(28.2%). And acute myelomonocytic leukemia(1.8%),
■erythroleukemia(2.7%), undifferentiated stem cell leukemia(1.8%), chronic leukemia(3.6%)
and chronic myelocytic leukemia(0.9%) were very rare.
2. In childhood leukemias the ratio of male and female was 1.3 and the age group of 3 to
4 years most frequent (24.5%). 3. Of the 110 childhood leukemias, acute type was in 95.5% and chronic type only in 4.5
%,Under the age of 4 years, acute type was more frequent in male than female, while after
the age 5 years both types occurred equally in male and female.
4.The duration of clinical manifestations before the diagnosis was within 1 month in 64.8%
of the cases, followed by 2 to 5 months in 26.8%. Of the symptoms at the time of the
amdission, pallor and bleeding were most frequent as 49.1% and 47.4% respectively.
5.In the acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hepatomegaly was in 68.3%, splenomegaly 69.3%
and lymph node enlargement 46.0%, and in the acute myeloblastic leukemia, hepatomegaly
was in 33.3%, splenomegaly 6.7% and lymphnode enlargement 10.0%. The signs were
significantly differed between acute lymphoblastic type and acute myeloblastic type.
6.Of the peripheral blood examination, leukocyte count was over 50,000/mm in 25.5%,
20,000 to 50,000/mm in 21.7%, 5000 to 10,000/mm in 20.8% and under 5,000/mm in 14.2%.
Hemoglobin, level was 4.1 to 8. Ogm% in 38.5%, 6.1 to 8. Ogn% in 26.0%, under 4.0 gm%
in 16.3% and over 10.1 gm% in 10.6%, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 41 to 80 mm/
hr in 42.4%, over 100 rnrn/hr in 26.9% and under 20 mm/hr in 9.6%. Platelet count under
50,000/mm was in 40.2%, 50,000 to 100,000/mm in 30.4% over 200,000/mm in 3.3%, and
reticulocyte count over 2.1% was only 9.5%.
