Abstract |
Two dimensional echocardiography was performed on 36 cases of ventricular septal defect and 29 of patent ductus arteriosus in children under 15 years old who were visited to the pediatric and chest surgery department of Busan national university hospital from January 1982 to March 1983. These were observed on clinical features, chest X-ray findings, electrocardiographic findings and echocardiographic datas were obtained.
The result were as follows: 1)The age distribution revealed a majority in the 6 to 10 year age group, and in this
group, VSD was 33.3% and PDA was 62.1%. 2)On admission, the chief complaints in both groups were frequent URI, exertional dyspnea, palpitation and in addition, growth retardation was observed in 25% of VSD. 3) Systolic murmur was heard in all of the VSD and continuous murmur in 86.2% of PDA on physical examination.
4)Chest X-ray revealed cardiac enlargement in 66.7% of VSD, increased pulmonary vascular markings in 68.9% of PDA and normal findings in 22.2% and 20.7% respectively. 5)EKG revealed left ventricular hypertrophy in 44.4% of VSD and 58.6% of PDA. Whereas, normal EKG was obtained in 25.0% and 24.5% in respective cases. 6) Echocardiography showed in control group the values of LVEDd, LVESd, LAD and LA/ AO as 3.7±0.53 cm, 2.12±0.25 cm, 2.21 ±0.39 cm and 1.15±0.16 respectively. 7)The values of LVEDd, LVESd, LAD and LA/AO in VSD group were 4.26±0.82 cm, 2. 86±0.63cm, 2.78±0.74 cm and 1.45±0.35 respectively which were significantly higher than those of the control group. 8)The values of LVEDd, LVESd, LAD and LA/AO in PDA group were 4.97±0.92 cm, 3.47 ±0.79 cm, 3.07±0.80 cm, 1. 55±0.39 respectively which were significantly higher than the
control group value.
