Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an atypical form of severe chronic renal parenchymal infection, which can be mistaken for tumor or other inflammatory renal disease due to similar clinical manifestations. This disease was classified into three stages based on the extent of involvement of renal and adjacent tissue by the xanthogranulomatous process.
