Systemic infection with Candida albicans in very premature infants is frequently fatal or associated
with significant morbidity in survivors. Several common practices in newborn intensive care units,
such as insertion of indwelling catheters, provision of parenteral nutrition, and prolonged administra-
tion of broad-spectrum antibiotics or aminophylline, are associated with an increased risk of systemic
disease.
