Continuous Intravenous Glucose Infusion and Serum Glucose in Neonates.

Serum glucose changes by constant infusion of glucose at the rate of 8 mg/kg/min were studied in 20 neonates. Serum glucose level elevated from 41 ±8 mg/dl to 80 ±31 mg/dl within 10 minutes of infusion. In some cases hyperglycemia above 150 mg/dl was observed from 40 minutes of infusion. The blood glucose response to a constant glucose infusion were measured in 62 premature infants weighing 1,000 to 2,200 gm.
