Purpose

In this study, we aimed to review the clinical presentation of preterm infants with gastrointestinal perforations and compare the clinical features of gastric perforation with other intestinal perforations.

Methods

The medical records of preterm neonates with pneumoperitoneum, admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) between January 1994 and December 2013, were retrospectively reviewed.

Purpose

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness in children, which is usually mild and self-limiting. However, in recent epidemics of HFMD in Asia, enterovirus 71 (EV71) has been recognized as a causative agent with severe neurological symptoms with or without cardiopulmonary involvement. HFMD was epidemic in Korea in the spring of 2009. Severe cases with complications including death have...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2003;46(3):284-290.   Published online March 15, 2003
Purpose : A new airway inflammatory marker, exhaled nitric oxide(ENO) has been reported to correlate with bronchial hyperresponsiveness(BHR) and atopy. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of ENO with BHR or atopy in patients with asthma and with allergic rhinitis. Methods : The subjects consisted of 55 children with asthma, 17 with allergic rhinitis, and 14 healthy...

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that may affect any part of the gastrointestinal system and multiple extraintestinal organs. Right lower quadrant abdominal pain with fever may be mistaken as a acute appendicitis. Pancreatitis has rarely been reported as a complication of Crohn’s disease. However, we experienced one case of Crohn’s disease with pancreatitis : the histologic examination after appendectomy of a 12-year-old...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1995;38(12):1664-1670.   Published online December 15, 1995
Purpose : Several studies recently have emphasized the value of sonography as an new therapeutic method for hydrostatic reduction of intussusception by using a saline enema under ultrasound guidance. The purpose of this study was to asses the diagnostic screening efficacy of sonography in suspected childhood intussusception and the value of ultrasound guidance in hydrostatic reduction performed with saline enema. Methods...
Renal Scarring in Relation to Vesicoureternal Reflux in Uriary Tract Infection

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1993;36(10):1402-1406.   Published online October 15, 1993
The vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is frequently found among the patients with urinary tract infection (UIT) and some patients with VUR progress to reflux nephropathy. The presence of scarring at UIT is an important determinant in the selection of those at risk of progressive damage. 99m Technetium dimercaptosuccinic acid (99mTc-DMSA) is a renal scanning agent provides a good quality of renal image...

Acute hemorrhagic cystitis characterized by gross hematuria and symptoms of bladder irritation occurs in children as a self-limited disease that must be differentiated from serious renal disease. We analyzed 22 cases of hemorrhagic cystitis which were managed in the Dept. of pediatrics, Kyung Hee university hospital and present the availability of bladder sonography for diagnosis of hemorrhagic cystitis and for follow-up. Recently, a new technique of reduction for intussusception using saline solution and ultrasonogram instead of barium enema is being used in several centers. In order to evaluate its efficacy, we have conducted the clinical observation in 40 patients with intussusception who were treated by hydrostatic saline reduction under the ultrasonographic guidance in Kyung-Hee University Hospital from June 1989 to July 1990. We have observed...

Idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) of the newborn remains an important and signifi- cant cause of morbidity and mortality despite of improvement in neonatal care. The clinical and radiologic features observed are the results of surfactant deficiency combined with a highly compliant chest wall. We have been applied the clinical and radiologic features in the diagnosis of IRDS. In 1974, Bomsel et al reported the...
