Stroke after percutaneous transhepatic variceal obliteration of esophageal varix in Caroli syndrome
Yoo Min Lee, Yoon Lee, Yon Ho Choe
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2013;56(11):500-504.   Published online November 27, 2013

Here we present the case of an 11-year-old female patient diagnosed with Caroli syndrome, who had refractory esophageal varices. The patient had a history of recurrent bleeding from esophageal varices, which was treated with endoscopic variceal ligation thrice over a period of 2 years. However, the bleeding was not controlled. When the patient finally visited the Emergency Department, the hemoglobin...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2011;54(6):260-266.   Published online June 30, 2011
Purpose

Infantile hepatic hemangioendothelioma (IHHE) is the most common type of hepatic vascular tumor in infancy. We conducted this study to review our clinical experience of patients with IHHE and to suggest management strategies.

Methods

We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 23 IHHE patients (10 males, 13 females) treated at the Asan Medical Center between 1996 and 2009.

Results

Median age at diagnosis was...

Selective embolization of the internal iliac arteries for the treatment of intractable hemorrhage in children with malignancies

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2011;54(4):169-175.   Published online April 30, 2011
Purpose

Acute internal hemorrhage is an occasionally life-threatening complication in pediatric cancer patients. Many therapeutic approaches have been used to control bleeding with various degrees of success. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of selective internal iliac artery embolization for controlling acute intractable bleeding in children with malignancies.

Methods

We retrospectively evaluated the cases of 6 children with various malignancies (acute lymphoblastic...

A Case of Infantile Hemangioendothelioma of the Liver Treated with Hepatic Embolization and Lobectomy
Jae Seon Kim, Soo Kyung Moon, Hye Sun Yoon, Tae Seok Lee
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(6):660-664.   Published online June 15, 2005
Infantile hemangioendothelioma(IHE) of the liver is the most common vascular tumor in infants before the age of 6 months. It is a histologically benign tumor with potentially life-threatening complications. The clinical manifestations are variable, ranging from asymptomatic forms to intractable high-output heart failure. In addition, abdominal mass, intraperitoneal hemorrhage due to rupture of mass, respiratory distress, hematologic abnormalities and jaundice...
Two Case of Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistula Treatment Depending on the Presence of Pulmonary Hypertension
Yun Jeong Huh, Jeong Tae Kim, Jae Young Choi
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(2):216-220.   Published online February 15, 2005
Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas(PAVFs) is a rare disorder that occurs in two to three children per 100,000 population. It is presented as absence of intervening capillary beds between the pulmonary artery and vein with resultant persistent right to left shunt. Other causes include trauma, liver cirrhosis, malignancy and schistosomiasis. It is mostly asymptomatic, but it may present with respiratory difficulty, cyanosis,...
A Case of Renovascular Hypertension Controlled by Renal Artery Embolization

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(2):212-215.   Published online February 15, 2005
Renal artery stenosis is a major cause of renovascular hypertension and the most common cause of treatable secondary hypertension. There are several methods to treat renal artery stenosis, including surgery, percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty(PTRA), and renal artery stenting(RAS). But, renal artery embolization can be tried in atherosclerotic stenosis, multiple stenosis, microaneurysm, and stenosis difficult to try PTRA or RAS. We...
A Case of Coil Embolization in a 15-year-old Child with Pulmonary Sequestration

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital mass of nonfunctional pulmonary tissue that lacks a normal-connection with the bronchial tree or the pulmonary arteries. It is clinically asymptomatic but when it is complicated with recurrent infection, it needs to be treated. Conventionally, surgical removal was recommended, but these days we are trying new and less invasive techniques, such as arterial embolization....
A Case of Transcatheter Coil Embolization of Diffuse Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation
Hye Kyung Lee, Gun Soo Han
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2001;44(9):1036-1040.   Published online September 15, 2001
This is a case report of multiple coil embolization for the diffuse pulmonary arteriovenous malformations( PAVM). PAVMs are direct communications between pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins, resulting in an anatomic right-to-left shunt that may cause paradoxical embolization to may occur, resulting in neurologic complications such as stroke or cerebral abscess. The treatment of choice for solitary PAVMs was limited to surgical resection or ligation...

Effectiveness of Preoperative Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization in Hepatoblastoma
Pyoung Han Hwang, Dae Sun Jo, Dae Yeol Lee, Jung Soo Kim
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2000;43(8):1098-1105.   Published online August 15, 2000
Purpose : To evaluate the effectiveness of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE) as a preoperative treatment for initially unresectable hepatoblastomas. Methods : From January 1995 to July 1999, we identified two boys and three girls(age range : 5- 27 months; mean age : 12 months) with pathologically-confirmed hepatoblastoma. To assess response to treatment, we utilized an identical TACE procedure for all the patients....

Coronary artery fistulas, though relatively rare, are the most common hemodynamically significant congenital anomalies of the coronary artery system. Conventional surgical repair has been performed by either ligating the anomalous coronary connection or by direct closing of the Astula's orifice in patients undergoing a cardiopulmonary bypass. More recently, transcatheter embolization of fistulas, either with detachable balloons or coils, has been...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1997;40(5):730-734.   Published online May 15, 1997
Congenital coronary artery fistulas are rare congenital heart anomalies. Surgical closure of these fistulas was the therapy of choice till recently. The recent development of a new accurate coil-delivery system has enabled us to embolize the vessels. Percutaneous transcatheter coil embolization is a safe and effective approach to treating coronary artery fistulas and should be considered as the best treatment...
Pseudoaneurysm after Renal Biopsy; Angigraphic Diagnosis and Treatment by Superselective Embolization

Clin Exp Pediatr. 1995;38(3):417-421.   Published online March 15, 1995
The use of superselective embolization was assessed as a treatment for bleeding from arteriovenous fistulas and pseudoaneurysm after renal biopsy procedure. But unless it is sufficiently selective, the procedure results in loss of significant amount of renal parenchyme. We experienced one case of renal arterial pseudoaneurysm, which happened at 5days after percutaneous renal biopsy. Diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm was made by...

Congential pulmonary arteriovenous fistula is an uncommon malformation which has an abnormal connection between the pulmonary capillary bed, in which venous blood in the pulmonary artery is shunted through the fistula into the pulmonary vein without exposure to alveolar air, enters the left heart, and results in systemic arterial unsaturation, polycythemia, cyanosis and clubbing. Death often results from cerebral abscess and rupture of the...
