The Laneefield group A hemolytic streptococcus liberates, among other substances, a hemolyzing agent
or streptolysin. Todd identified a streptolysin S and a much more antigenic streptolysin O. The antibody
for streptolysin O (ASO) is readily measurable, and a specific antibody of the hemolytic streptococcus and
according to Mote and Jones, is not increased in infection in which the streptococcus has been excluded.
