Serum ionized Ca measured with new ion-selected electrode and Q-oTc interval in newborn infants.
Beom Joo Kim, Chang Hee Han, Heng Mi Kim, Doo Hong Ahn
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):303-310.   Published online March 31, 1991
The reliability of electrocardiographic detection of serum ionized Ca level was studied in 13 preterm and 32 full term infants. The concentration of ionized Ca was measured with a new ion-selected electrode, NOVA SP4 (NOVA Biomedical, Waltham, MA USA). The Q-oTc interval correlated with total Ca (r=o.553, p<0.01) and ionized Ca (r= -0.435, p< 0.01) but the Q-Tc interval did not correlate with total and...
Percutaneous transluminal balloon valvuloplasty for congenital pulmonary valvular stenosis.
Sung Min Choi, Sang Bum Lee, Doo Hong Ahn, Yong Joo Kim
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):311-316.   Published online March 31, 1991
Congenital pulmonary valvular stenosis was relieved by percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty during cardiac catheterization on 8 children aged 14 months to 8 years. Before dilatation, the transpulmonary systolic pressure gradients ranged from 33 mmHg to 79 mmHg (Mean:52.00 ± 18.16 mmHg). There were significant reduction in the transpulmonic systolic pressure gradients immediate after balloon dilatation (Mean:17.38±11.16mmHg). In follow up 4 patients, this decreased pressure gradients have...
Changes of immune indices in children with recurrent gross hematuria (IgA nephropathy and non-IgA nephropathy) and Henoch-Schonlein purpura nephritis.

A Prospective study was conducted to see the changes of immune system in recurrent gross hematuria (IgA nephropathy and non-IgA nephropathy) and HSP nephritis in children. Study patients consisted of 60 children with recurrent gross hematuria and Henoch-schdnlein purpura nephritis (8 IgA nephropathy, 24 non-IgA nephropathy and 28 HSP nephritis). The cellular immune indices (total T, T4, T8 cells and T4/T8 ratio) and humoral...
Altered secretion of arginine vasopressin in children with CNS diseases.

A prospective study was conducted to see the pattern and mechanism of arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion in children with CNS diseases. Study population consisted of 21 cases with aseptic meningi- tis (meningitis group) and another 21 cases with viral encephalitis or encephalopathy (encephalitis group), who had been admitted to our Pediatric Department during 10 months’ period from April 1985 to January 1986. Seventeen healthy...
Clinical effects of yeast derived recombinant methionyl growth hormone in growth hormone deficiency.
Byung Churl Lee
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):334-339.   Published online March 31, 1991
Since the success of human growth hormone (hGH) synthesis by recombinant DNA technology, these GH products are used in the treatment of growth hormone deficiency. Recently, methionyl-GH has been produced in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae 2150 by the use of a recombinant method. In this paper, the clinical efficacy and. immunogenicity of this GH was studied during therapy of 1 year in 20 children...
The normal values of platelet count, mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in the normal newborn, small for gestational age and premature neonates.
Eun Kyung Oh, Hae Yong Lee, Hwang Min Kim, Jae Seung Yang, Baek Keun Lim, Jong Soo Kim
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):340-347.   Published online March 31, 1991
The importance of establishing authentic normal platelet count, mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in the newborn has been emphasized, but they have not been firmly established. We have presented values for platelet count, mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in the venous blood of term, small for gestational age and premature neonates at postnatal day 1 and 7. The results were...
Effect of fluid restriction on postnatal weight and outcome in very low birth weight infants.
Chul Lee, Hyeon Soo Lee, Ran Namgung, Dong Gwan Han
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):348-354.   Published online March 31, 1991
We studied 45 very low birth weight infants for change in birth weight, urine output, serum Na level, ventilatory support and outcome between two groups after fluid restriction therapy. Group 1 (n=17) were infants whose weight loss were more than 5% of birth weight. Group 2 (n=17) were infants whose weight loss were more than 5% of birth weight. 1) Group 1 had more fluid...
Prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen in pediatric in patients.
Kyung Hee Kim, Myung Ik Lee, Young Jin Hong, Keun Chan Sohn
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):355-362.   Published online March 31, 1991
Thirty three from 689 children (4.79%) who were screened among hospitalized patients from July, 1986 to June, 1988, were positive for hepatitis B surface antigen in their serum sample tested by radioimmunoassay. The positive rate of hepatitis B surface antigen was 3.04% when the hepatitis patients were excluded. The incidence of hepatitis B surface antigen was higher (5.18%) in male than in famale (4.17%)...

J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):408-412.   Published online March 31, 1991
Citrobacter although once regarded as nonpathogenic, has been responsible for many well- documented pathologic conditions, especially in compromised hosts. These include urinary tract, pulmonary and bone infections, gastroenteritis, gangrenous ulcer with septicemia, meningitis, and brain abscess. Citrobacter organisms have a mosaic of 0, K and H antigens that are found in the Enterobacter- iaceae. Cross reactions with antisera of other members of the Enterobacteriaceae suggest...
A case of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis.
Jin Oh Kim, Soo Young Cho, Joo Hyung Kim, Dae Yeol Lee, Jung Soo Kim
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):413-418.   Published online March 31, 1991
Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an atypical form of severe chronic renal parenchymal infection, which can be mistaken for tumor or other inflammatory renal disease due to similar clinical manifestations. This disease was classified into three stages based on the extent of involvement of renal and adjacent tissue by the xanthogranulomatous process. In stage I (nephric), the characteristic xantho- granulomatous inflammatory process is confined to the kidney. The...

J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1991;34(3):419-425.   Published online March 31, 1991
von Willebrand disease is a bleeding disorder characterized by a complex hemostatic defect. These abnormalities arise from quantitative and/or qualitative abnormalities of von Willebrand factor which circulates in plasma complexed with the factor VID procoagulant protein. We have experienced three cases of type I von Willebrand disease in two children and their mother. They had prolonged bleeding time and partial thromboplastin time, mildly decreased...

Infants & children with hypothyrodism usually manifest variable skeletal abnormality. These features are the delay in longitudinal bone growth, the delay in epiphyseal maturation (=delay in bone age), the disturbances in bone mineralization and charateristic multiple stippled epiphysis (cretenoid epiphyseal dysgenesis). But many pediatrician have only concerned about the delay in epiphyseal maturation. Epiphyseal dysgenesis can be used a marker to find out the begining...
