The pharmacological treatment of patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome: oral ibuprofen vs. indomethacin
Soo Jin Lee, Ji Young Kim, Eun Ae Park, Sejung Sohn
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2008;51(9):956-963.   Published online September 15, 2008
Purpose : Indomethacin is widely used for the prophylaxis and treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA); however, it is associated with side effects such as renal failure, intraventricular hemorrhage, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Intravenous ibuprofen has been shown to be as effective as indomethacin in prompting PDA closure. If treatment with oral ibuprofen is as effective as indomethacin, it would have...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2008;51(7):754-759.   Published online July 15, 2008
Purpose : Abnormal activation patterns of Th1/Th2-cells have been suggested to increase the prevalence of allergic diseases. Prevention is regarded as an important corner stone in the management of allergic diseases. In this study, we have investigated the relationship between cord blood levels of IL-4, IL-10, and IL-12 in preterm newborns and the development of allergic respiratory diseases in infancy Methods...

Leptin, adiponectin, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor- in obese adolescents
Joo Hyun Gil, Jung Ah Lee, Ji Young Kim, Young Mi Hong
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2008;51(6):597-603.   Published online June 15, 2008
Purpose : Obesity is associated with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance and the presence of pro-inflammatory mediators are thought to cause a state of vascular endothelial dysfunction, an abnormal lipid profile, hypertension, and vascular inflammation. These chronic inflammatory responses, which are characterized by abnormal cytokine production, lead to activation of a pro-inflammatory signaling pathway. Leptin is an important mediator of inflammatory...

Purpose : Mycophenolic acid (MPA), the active metabolite of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), is a potent inhibitor of inosine-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), a new immunosuppressive drug used. It was reported that MPA protected neurons after excitotoxic injury, induced apoptosis in microglial cells. However, the effects of MPA on hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has not been yet evaluated. Therefore, we examined whether MPA...

A Case of Pseudohypoparathyroidism in a Premature Infant
Jong Il Yang, Jang Won Seo, Ji Young Kim
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2003;46(10):1032-1035.   Published online October 15, 2003
In pseudohypoparathyroidism as reported by Albright in 1942, the parathyroid gland can normally synthesize and secrete parathyroid hormone(PTH). Pseudohypoparathyroidism has a similar biochemical finding with hypoparathyroidisms like hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia due to target tissue resistance to PTH. Administered PTH does not raise the serum levels of calcium and urinary phosphate. PTH activates G-protein in peripheral tissue and adenylate cyclase through...
