The most frequent organisms causing 45 episodes in neutropenic patient were Escherichia coli (28%), Klebsiella species (18%), Pseudomonas species (9%), polymicrobic (9%,), and Staphylococcus aureus (7%). The overal mortality was 13% (5/39). The most frequent organisms...
Plasma Somatomedin C Levels in Normal Children
Bo Young Yun, Hoan Jong Lee
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1493-1500.   Published online November 15, 1992
Somatomedin C, the insulin-like growth factor I is suggested to mediate the growth-promoting effect of growth hormone. Sm-C, mostly bound to plasma protein forming an IGF-I protein complex, is slowly cleared from plasma and thus its plasma concentration is quite constant. A single sampling of blood for Sm-C is sufficient for the measurement of its concentration. For the evaluation of...

Idiopathic hypercalciuria is defined as excessive urinary excretion of calcium in normocalcemia without any primary cause. We performed the sono-guided percutaneous renal biopsy for patients of recurrent hematuria, persistent microscopic hematuria, proteinuria and RBC cast to evaluate underlying nephropathy. We could obtained the following results 1) The age at the renal biopsy ranged from 3 years to 14 years. Sex ratio is 1.9:1...
The Significance of Nucleated Red Blood Cell Counts in Various Conditions Associated with Acute or Chronic Perinatal Asphyxia

This study was conducted to find out the significance of nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) in neonates, especially associated with acute or chronic perinatal asphyxia. So, we compared NRBC counts in various neonatal groups, such as normal newborn, small for gestational age (SGA), premature, acute perinatal asphyxia, & hyaline membrane disease (HMD). In the first day of life, we examined...
The Treatment Results of Childhood RhaMomyosarcoma

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a relatively common solid tumor in infants, children and adolescents, according for 4% to 8% of malignant disease in children less than 15 years old. Use of a multimodal approach to treatment has resulted in a dramatic improvement. Yonsei Cancer Center in Korea, since it's establishment in 1975, has been a state of multimodal approach. Thirty-seven cases of childhood...
Portal Hypertension in Children
Young Sook Kim, Ki Sup Chung
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1528-1536.   Published online November 15, 1992
Portal hypertension assumes special interest in children due to the large variety of causes, the apparent difficulty of performing surgical portal systemic shunts because of the small size of vessels, the doubt still cast on the long term tolerance of portal systemic shunts and the theoretical possibility of spontaneous regression of varices with growth. Thirty cases of portal hypertension under...
A Significance of the Sinusitis in Asthma of Chileren
Kyong Og Ko, Young Hun Chung
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1537-1545.   Published online November 15, 1992
It has long been recognized that sinusitis are commonly associated with asthma. Studies have observe a high coincidence of asthma and sinusitis. Despite observations of thease findings, a direct cause and effect relationship remains to be estabilished. So this study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship of bronchial asthma and sinusitis. 96 asthmatics and 127 non-asthmatic controls in children were taken...

The measurement of serum total cholesterol was made in 1 month to 16 years of age group (total 1505, male 700, female 805) to know the normal value on each age and sex group, and incidence of hypercholesterolemia in children. The results were as follows: 1) Serum total cholesterol levels were 163.12¡¾38.01 mg/dl in male, 165.69¡¾38.24 mg/dl in female, and 164.40¡¾38.12 mg/dl...
Quantitative Assessment of the Diameters of Tricuspid Valve, Mitral Valve and Great Arteries in the Normal Human Fetus -Cross Sectional Echocardiographic Study-
Jung Yun Choi, Kyung Hee Park, Chung Il Noh, Yong Soo Yun, I Seok Kang, Eun Sook Han
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1566-1572.   Published online November 15, 1992
In order to assess the growth of the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, and the aortic and pulmonary pathways in the normal human fetus, 181 fetal echocardiograms taken from 127 pregnant women (some women had repeated examinations) were analysed. Diameters were measured from cross sectional images and were correlated with gestational period. The diameter ratios of tricuspid valve/mitral valve, aorta/main pulmonary artery,...

A Case of Wilson Disease Associated with Hemolytic Anemia and Cholelithiasis
Kyeong Cheol Yoon, Yong Hwa Shin, Ho Seek Ahn, Sung Won Kim
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1573-1577.   Published online November 15, 1992
Wilson disease is an autosomal recessive abnormality in the hepatic excretion of copper that results in toxic accumulation of the metal in liver, brain, and other organs. Hemolytic anemia frequently complicates the courses of Wilson disease and may be the initial clinical feature of Wilson disease. Since hemolysis may be preceding the onset of hepatic manifestation and Kayser-Fleischer ring is...
A Case of Congenital Pelger-Huet Anomaly
Soo Jung Lee, Young Yoo Kim, Seung Won Kang, Jong Wan Kim, Kyung Tai Whang, Sung Ho Cho
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1578-1583.   Published online November 15, 1992
Congenital Pelger-Huet anomaly is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by incomplete nuclear segmentation of neutrophils without functional disturbance. The morphology of these mature but hyposegmented neutrophils may be confused with that of immature neutrophils (bands), thereby suggesting bacterial infection. We experienced a case of congenital Pelger-Huët anomaly on routine hematologic examination in a 7-year old boy who was admitted because of...

Hemimegalencephaly is a rare brain malformation characterized by congenital hypertrophy of one cerebral hemisphere with ipsilateral increased volume of the white matter and dilatation of the lateral ventricle. We have experienced two cases of hemimegalencephaly in neonates who were admitted because of repetitive seizure. One case was simple hemimegalencephaly and the other case was combined by corpus callosum agenesis. Diagnosis was...

J Korean Pediatr Soc. 1992;35(11):1597-1601.   Published online November 15, 1992
Neonatal hydrometrocolopos is a rare congenital anomaly, which is thought to be caused by both vaginal obstruction such as imperforate hymen, transverse vaginal septum or vaginal atresia and sufficient maternal estrogenic stimulation to provoke secretion from the glands in the neonatal reproductive tract. The presence of lower abdominal mass in a female infant should always arouse the suspicion of hydrometrocolpos...
