It is likely that transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is involved in the pathogenesis of HSP. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether TGF-β promoter polymorphism is associated with the renal involvement of childhood HSP. Methods : Thirty-four patients younger than 15 years, who...

The age of onset is suggested as a main risk factor. We assessed the characteristics of adolescent-onset HSP. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed 205 cases presented from Aug. 1993 to Oct. 2003. Patients were classified...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2004;47(12):1262-1265.   Published online December 15, 2004
Childhood immune thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP) is a typically benign self-limiting bleeding disorder of not fully known autoimmune etiology. Chronic ITP, which is defined by duration of more than 6 months, occurs in approximately 20% of children. Neither the risk of bleeding nor the type of disease, acute or chronic, can be predicted at initial presentation. The indication of treatment, choice...

A twenty six months-old boy developed hemophagocytic syndrome during the course of Kawasaki disease. Despite the appropriate treatment modalities for Kawasaki disease, he developed thrombocytopenia, hepatomegaly, high-grade fever, hypertriglyceridemia, peripheral gangrene, and evidence of hemophagocytosis in bone marrow biopsy. Although the course was stormy, he responded well to a combination therapy of corticosteroid and etoposide.

Kye Wool Kang, Hwang Min Kim, Won Kyu Choi, Baek Keun Lim, Chang Hun Lee
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2001;44(9):1041-1046.   Published online September 15, 2001
Vascular leak syndrome(VLS) is characterized by endothelial damage, which causes extravasation of plasma proteins and fluid from capillaries into the extravascular space. It has been suggested that the increased vascular permeability is the result of an IL-2-induced suppression of endothelin- 1 secretion by endothelial cells, an IL-2-induced activation of the complement cascade or TNF-αrelease from IL-2-activated T-cells. A 13-year-old male patient visited our hospital...

Tuberculous meningitis is still relatively common infectious disease of central nervous system in korea. The prognosis of tuberculous meningitis is closely related to the state at which treatment if started. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme which irreversibly hydrolyzes adenosine into inosine and ammonia. Recent investigations have suggested that the measurement of ADA activities in cerebrospinal fluid is useful in the...

Brain computed tomograpy is particularly accurate in defining cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) space because of the relatively great density difference between CSF and brain parenchyma. This noninvasive procedure has very quickly become definitive in the diagnosis of hydrocephalus. However, while the typical clinical and radiological picture of a hydrocephalic patient leaves no doubt as to the need for adequate surgical treatment....
